One of the clients that my firm, Russ Reid, represents is a group called Operation Smile. Many of you know them as the cleft palate repair guys. Operation Smile brings doctors all over the world to operate on children and adults who were born with a cleft palate. For those of you who don't know what a cleft palate is, it is a birth deformity where the 2 palates of the roof of your mouth never fuse together. Depending on the severity of the deformity, it can reach up into your nasal cavity and out to the front of your mouth.
Last Saturday Mike and I attended Operation Smile's 3rd Annual Grin Gala. It was held at the Hall of Flags at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. (Beautiful building bordering on Lafayette Park, directly across from the White House.) This gala is a chance for the organization to show all of it's supporters a glimpse of the great work they do around the world, and as a way to raise money for their cause. The theme was the roaring 20's, and SADLY, no one but myself and one other woman really dressed up according to the theme. They had a live band playing, a crepe station (YUM!), 2 full service bars, lots of finger food, tons of mini desserts (eclairs, creme puffs, cup-cakes, all in miniature form), and an old time photo-booth where it took 6 rapid fire pictures and then printed them in 10 seconds with the emblem of the Operation Smile Grin Gala. There was also a silent auction with a ton of high-dollar amount items, including an 8-day trip to Vietnam, dinner for 8 with a top DC chef, a Gucci bag and wallet... the list went on and on!
The Operation Smile folks wanted a lot of Russ Reider's to attend the gala, so Mike and I got to go for free! (Very cool!). Myself and a few of my co-workers attended with their wives (see picture above).
All in all we had a great time celebrating and supporting not only a great client, but a great cause.
