For the 4th of July we had a small barbecue and pool party at our apartment complex with our friends Zeenia, Matt, Nate, Jimmy, and Scott. The topic of the day, besides the heat and the excellent food, was where to watch the fireworks from.
On July 4th our nation's capital is filled to the breaking point with tourists, patriots, families, locals, you name it. At first we were reluctant to venture out onto the Mall because of the heat, the lack of shade, and the sheer number of people spending their day amongst the monuments and the Smithsonian Museums.
We played it perfectly though, and made it down to the fringes of the National Mall about 15 minutes before the fireworks show began. As expected, it was wall to wall people, but our small group was able to congregate on a small swath of sidewalk with a perfect view of the Washington Monument.
Shortly after dark the fireworks began, being shot off from behind the Washington Monument. Quite a sight to see. This was definitely one of the best fireworks show I have ever seen. Although there was no accompanying music, the crowd was incredibly hooked on the show and there was a very special energy rippling through the crowd.
After the fireworks ended the crowds quickly dispersed and we headed up towards the U.S. Capitol Building where a special show had been filmed that night with guests including actors, singers, and comedians. All in all, a wonderful night in a very patriotic city!
