This last Saturday Mike and I ventured out onto the National Mall to take in the Kite Festival. All day long children, families, adults, students, tourists and residents took to the grassy fields between the Smithsonian Museums and flew kites. There were so many different types of kites, from your average home-made kite, to very large, intricate kites.
Some kites had beautiful designs while others were very plain. Many were shaped into animals (sharks, fish, dragons, birds, etc.), while some were much more intricate. We saw one that was shaped like a firetruck, and another that was shaped like a motorcycle rider ON a motorcycle!
Everyone we came across kept trying over and over to get their kites launched so they could run after them. Kids ran all over the place chasing the long tails of some. With the Washington Monument and the Capitol Building in the background, it was definitely a site to behold!
I have never wanted to run around and try to fly a kite so much in my whole life! And it was a WINDY day, perfect for flying a kite! So much fun!
And of course, what trip to the National Mall on a sunny spring day is complete without a ride on the carousel! This particular carousel was built in the 1940's, and installed on the National Mall in 1967. Among its run of the mill painted horses, it includes a variety of "patriotic" animals (horses and zebras painted in red, white and blue), as well as a pretty magnificent sea-dragon (which I did not ride on, a little girl in front of me got to it first!).
