On Saturday Mike and I ventured out onto Capitol Hill to take stock of the protesters. We actually wanted to see these "Tea Party Patriots" up close and personal, and we definitely got an eye-full.
Above is a picture of a protest car that was parked on the National Mall between the Smithsonian Museums and the Capitol. Supposedly it is out on display almost every day.
Below is a picture of a group of healthcare reform protesters. Most of the people we saw were older and white. Some had their kid with them. We saw a lot of people with shirts and banners that said "Don't Tread On Me." Overall it was a relatively non-violent protest (we stopped and talked to the Metro Police and they seemed pretty calm about the whole situation), although it came out later on the news that some of the protesters who were at the House buildings were yelling at House members, calling out racial slurs, and even spitting. Abominable behavior.
While we were amid the protesters on the Hill, President Obama was inside the Capitol addressing the Democratic Caucus. We wanted to watch the Presidential Motorcade leave the Capitol, but we missed it by about 5 minutes while we were still checking out the protesters.
On Sunday, we didn't go to the Hill during the day, but there were thousands of protesters there for a variety of reasons, including the 65th anniversary of Iwo Jima, immigration reform, and of course, healthcare reform.
